Your questions answered..

Can I Get Custom Orthotics on the NHS?

If you’re dealing with foot pain or even back issues, you might be wondering if you can get custom orthotics through the NHS. After all, if it’s something that could help with your pain and movement, surely, it’s covered, right? Well, the answer is yes but also no.

The NHS provides orthotics, but it’s not as simple as walking in and asking for a pair of custom insoles. First, you need a referral, and your condition must meet a certain criterion. The NHS typically provides orthotics for more serious medical issues, like severe foot deformities, diabetic complications, or long-term conditions. If your problem is causing extreme pain or affecting your daily life, you might be eligible for NHS support. they do not provide them for improving performance and function in sports and football.

If you do qualify, waiting times can be long. NHS podiatry services are in high demand, and it could take weeks or even months to get assessed. Then, you may not get fully custom-made orthotics. Often, the NHS provides more basic, pre-made insoles that offer general support rather than something tailored exactly to your feet. While these can help, they might not provide the specific correction you need.

Another thing to keep in mind is that NHS orthotics are often made with cost efficiency in mind rather than comfort or durability. They might not be as lightweight, slim, or long-lasting as the ones you’d get privately, and different types are not made for different types of shoes. If you need adjustments or replacements, there is the possibility you may face another long wait.

So yes, you can get orthotics through the NHS, but whether it’s the best option for you depends on your needs, your patience, and how customised you want your solution to be.

How Much Do Custom Orthotics Cost? Investment or Waste?

If you’re struggling with foot pain or you’ve been to the GP, osteopath or podiatrist with a foot injury, you’ve probably considered orthotics or been recommended them.

But…

How much do custom orthotics cost? And are they worth the investment?

When anyone is in the market for insole and orthotics, they will search the internet and a vast array of types will be listed, predominantly off the shelf insoles. The truth is, off the shelf is guess work and mainly for comfort they are not an orthotic which has a specific action or clinical reasoning, I mean how could they? They have never seen your feet. While non-custom insoles may seem like a cheaper option upfront, they often lead to wasted money, time, and even increased injury risk. In contrast, 3D custom orthotics are specifically designed for your feet without guess work, ensuring better support, comfort, and long-term value.

The Real Cost of Non-Custom Orthotics

Over the counter are often purchased with hope, hope for relief without the higher cost of custom orthotics. These mass-produced options range from £20 to £100 and trainers can be £100 to £300 plus. Serious trainers and are changed every few hundred miles depending on there use, but they come with a big downside, they’re based on guesswork.

This is because the data capture is limited to visual interpretation, non-existent or simply the sales blurb from the seller.

There is no guarantee they’ll work, because quite simply they don’t account for your unique foot structure.

How long they last can vary on usage, but 3-6 months is not uncommon, leading to repeated expenditure and cost.

No matter what you put in your shoe there will be functional changes in how the foot contacts the ground impact’s function, getting it wrong can lead to potential for further injury. The wrong trainer with the wrong support worsens existing problems, leading to time off training with a reduction in your favourite sports with the addition of costly treatment bills as the need for osteopathy and physiotherapy may be required.

In short, non-custom orthotics initially are cheaper at first, but they can cost significantly more over time with little positive impact and not the desired result.

Can You Put Orthotics in Boots?

Absolutely! orthotics in boots is one of the most important actions you can take. it’s one of the best ways to get the full benefit of them, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet in work or hiking boots. As long as the boot has a removable insole or enough space to accommodate them comfortably, custom orthotics can slip right in and start working their magic.

A lot of people think orthotics are only for running shoes or trainers for athletes such as Mo Farah and premier league football clubs, but that’s not the case. Whether you’re on a construction site, walking long distances, or just need extra support during long days, having your custom orthotics inside your boots means you’re getting that support where it matters most, right at the foundation.

What’s even better? If you’re someone who’s self-employed or run a business that lifts, carries or moves things such as pushing and pulling you can attend our 121 manual handling session—Manual handling is a requirement under HSE guidelines and regulations. We include a gait analysis and custom orthotics fitting as part of the process. So not only are you ticking off a mandatory box for workplace safety, but you’re also walking away with support that’s built specifically for how you move and the demands of your day-to-day.

It’s a practical way to reduce strain, improve posture, and help prevent those common aches and pains that creep in over time, especially if your job is physical, they can also go in any other shoes or trainers you use at work. So yes, pop them in your boots and even better, let’s make sure they’re custom-made for your body and your goals.

Can You Put Custom Orthotics as a Tax Expense?

It’s a question we get quite regularly, can you claim orthotics as a tax expense?

The answer is yes, in many cases you can, especially when they’re prescribed for work-related use and injuries in the feet and commonly to assist back pain issues.

If your custom orthotics are part of our manual handling 121 training (A HSE requirement), and especially if they’re made specifically for your work boots, they can often be considered a legitimate medical or work-related expense, the benefit of custom orthotics they will fit a variety of shoes and not just boot, such as trainers and you daily shoes.

When you’re required to be on your feet all day, lifting, shifting, or operating in environments that put strain on your body, having the right support isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. That’s why our manual handling 121 training includes a full gait analysis providing a the clinical reasons why orthotics are required, a functional assessment, Back-Safe lifting techniques and prescribed custom orthotics.

It’s not just about comfort, it’s about long-term protection, injury prevention, and compliance with health and safety guidelines.

So, if you’re getting orthotics as part of a workplace requirement or as a recommendation from a qualified health professional, there’s a strong case to include them in your tax claims. As always, it’s best to check with your accountant or HR team for the exact rules, but it’s absolutely worth looking into, especially when the orthotics are purpose-built to keep you safe and supported on the job.

Do you need bigger shoes if you wear orthotics?

Not necessarily, but it depends on the type of orthotics and the shoes you wear. Most custom orthotics are designed to replace the shoe’s original insole, meaning they shouldn’t require a bigger shoe size. However, shoes with removable insoles or those that offer a bit more depth can make a big difference in comfort and fit. If your shoes feel tight or you notice pressure points after inserting orthotics, it might be a sign you need a different style rather than a larger size. It’s always a good idea to try on shoes while wearing your orthotics to ensure a proper fit. In some cases, going up half a size may help, but the key is making sure the orthotics are well-seated without crowding your toes or affecting how the shoe supports your foot. A fitting with a specialist can provide the best guidance.

Always take the shoe you intend to put them in with you when having a gait analysis with the intention of getting orthotics.
