Case study- Sciatica Treatment And Recovery
How an electrician got back to work and enjoying life after getting severe sciatica at work.
At Radcliffe osteopaths, we understand the physical and emotional toll that conditions like sciatica can take on your daily life. This case study follows John, a 47-year-old electrician, father of two, and passionate about football (we didn’t hold against him being a red), walking his dog, and hiking the fells with his wife. Like many hardworking, active people, John was blindsided when sciatica suddenly disrupted both his work and personal life. Here’s how we helped John manage his condition and return to what he loves, without long periods off work.
How it all started
John has been an electrician for over 25 years. Running his own business means long days, heavy lifting, and working in tight spaces, all of which put a lot of strain on his back.
One ordinary day at work, while bending down to move some cable, John suddenly felt his back ‘go.’ He was struck with immediate pain, radiating down his leg—a classic symptom of sciatica.
“I couldn’t believe it. One minute I was fine, the next I could barely move without pain,” John recalls.
He visited his GP, who diagnosed him with sciatica and prescribed painkillers. While the medication provided temporary relief, John knew he needed a longer-term solution, and the exercises from the internet made things worse.
With two children and self-employed, he couldn’t afford to take long periods off work. Plus, he was missing out on the things he enjoyed most—family time, playing football with his mates, walking the dog, and hiking etc.
What you need to know about sciatica
What you need to know about Sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom, not a condition in itself. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down to your legs, is compressed or irritated. As well as severe back pain this can lead to shooting pain, tingling, and numbness, usually down one leg. The most common causes are herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or muscle spasms, but the good news is that, with the right treatment, sciatica is highly manageable.
John’s Journey with Radcliffe Osteopath Francis Connor..
After John’s initial GP visit, he quickly realised that painkillers alone weren’t going to solve the issue, and the generic exercise like the internet suggestions either did another or made things worse. That’s when he turned to Francis Connor Osteopath and Physiotherapist.
His treatment plan was designed to help him recover quickly and safely, so he could return to work and get back to enjoying life.
Initial Assessment
The first step was a thorough assessment. We examined John’s posture, mobility, and movement patterns to pinpoint the root cause of his sciatica. His work as an electrician involved repetitive bending, lifting, and standing, which had likely contributed to the strain on his lower back. The immediate goal was to reduce his pain and prevent further nerve irritation.
The priority of the consultation is to understanding the root cause of your sciatica because sciatica itself is not a diagnosis—it’s a symptom that indicates your sciatic nerve is being irritated or compressed, its like the body waving a flag saying this is being hurt by something. The key to effective treatment lies in identifying the underlying issue, whether it’s a herniated disc, muscle imbalance, or another condition affecting your spine. By pinpointing the exact tissue or pathology causing your pain, we can tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs, rather than applying generic solutions and the same old exercises anyone can get of the internet, including the GP.
This means you’ll receive targeted exercises and hands-on therapy that address the cause of your discomfort, leading to faster, more effective relief. A clear understanding of the problem allows us to help you not just manage the symptoms but work towards long-term recovery.
Hands-On Treatment
We began hands-on osteopathic treatment to address the joint and muscle function which will reduce the irritation of the nerve helping reduce inflammation and tension in John’s lower back and surrounding muscles. Techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, manipulation and stretching helped release tight muscles, improve function and improve blood flow.
“After just a couple of sessions, I noticed a difference. The pain was less intense, and I could move a bit more freely,” John says.
Tailored Exercise Program
To complement the osteopathic treatments, we developed a specific exercise program to strengthen John’s core and lower back muscles. Strengthening these areas would help relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve, improving his stability and mobility while reducing the likelihood of future flare-ups.
John’s busy schedule meant we needed exercises that could be done at home or even during breaks at work. These targeted stretches and strengthening exercises were easy to integrate into his daily routine.
Education on posture and lifting techniques
Given John’s job as an electrician, where bending and lifting are unavoidable, we also focused on educating him about proper posture, manual handling and safe lifting techniques. By improving his biomechanics, John could reduce the strain on his back and prevent aggravating his sciatica. Simple adjustments, like using better lifting mechanics and taking short breaks to stretch during the workday, made a huge difference.
John was eager to get back to playing football and hiking the fells with his wife. We worked with him to gradually reintroduce these activities without overloading his back too soon. We encouraged him to start with short walks and light football drills before fully returning to his more demanding hobbies.
Getting back to work and life
Within six weeks, John was back on his feet, managing his sciatica and working full-time. He didn’t have to take prolonged time off work, thanks to a well-structured treatment and exercise plan that he followed diligently.
“Before coming to Francis Connor, I was really worried I’d have to give up work for a while—and as someone who’s self-employed, that just wasn’t an option. The team helped me get back to my job, and even better, back to my life,” John.
Now, John continues to enjoy walking his dog, play football with his friends, and taking on the beautiful fells with his wife, pain-free.
